Damn. Tonight’s dinner might have been even worse than the food fight that broke out during Beckett’s first night here. If I had known about Cortney’s aversion to barbecue sauce, I wouldn’t have bothered with the brisket, or I could have tried a different kind of seasoning. Although I wasn’t convinced that Liam wasn’t involved in the chaos that ensued when Cortney took that first bite. Even if both of them claimed he was innocent.

The rest of the evening had been uneventful. Beckett and Cortney handled kitchen clean-up, then the twins talked Cortney into a game of Risk. They were both shocked and elated at his ability to keep up with their evil genius ways. After an intense two-hour game, he could totally claim he was the first resident of our home to best them. All night, I watched him win over the kids one at a time. All except Liam. Though not for lack of trying.

After I’d changed and brushed my teeth, I headed for my room. Normally, I slept in shorts and a crop top. Tonight, though, it felt weird. Cortney sat on the edge of the bed in sweats and a long-sleeve T-shirt. That seemed like overkill, but who was I to judge?

“Do you have a…” He cleared his throat. “A side?”

I hadn’t slept in a bed with anyone in fifteen years, so I had no idea. I had never slept well, and when I hooked up, I left once they were down for the count.

“Do you?” I asked.

“You’re—” He waved his hand at my stomach. “Growing a person. I need you to be comfortable. Otherwise, I won’t sleep.”

Pursing my lips, I looked at one lavender pillow, then the other. “Can I try both?”

“Both?” he cocked his head and frowned.

“Like lay down and see which vibe works.”

He grinned. “I can never anticipate your answers.”

I waved his comment off. “Move over. Let me try the right side.”

We lay side by side, but I didn’t love being between the wall and the wall of a man. I felt too claustrophobic.

“Nope. Switch.” I sat up.

Rather than scooting to the end of the bed and walking around it, I clambered over Cortney. I straddled him, intent on moving to the other side quickly, but before I could break away from him, he settled a hand at my waist. He lay flat on his back, his eyes blazing and his fingers biting into my hips.

“Fuck.” Swallowing hard, he squeezed his eyes shut. “Sorry,” he said when he opened them again. Releasing me from his grip, he folded his hands over his chest.

I shifted, preparing to dismount, and my ass brushed against his hardening cock. The feel of him made my heart rate pick up and a flame ignite low in my belly.

He cleared his throat and gripped my hips again, but this time he lifted me and scooted closer to the wall, then set me down on the mattress.

“How’s this?” he asked.

How was it? Fine. The bed was fine. But my body was still lit up from his touch.
